Police to Teacher – My Unexpected Story – Ana-Maira Ciui – Part 1
The first part of Ana-Maria Ciui's account of moving from the Romanian police force, which she joined after a law degree, into language teaching and founding Ciui Training. It describes what the two careers have in common and how the change came about.
Police to Teacher - My Unexpected Story
How I Turned My Mission into Meaningful Language Learning
After I finished my Law degree in Romania, I landed a position in the police force (Poliția Română). My journey as a rookie police offices began in uniform, patrolling the streets and helping to protect the communites. I quickly began to realise that having a present in the communnity was extremely important and a critical part of this, was communication.
Being able to build relationships and trust helped not only the community, but also the police force is being able to achieve its goals easier and quicker.
And of course, getting to drive police cars with the lights and sirens going was always a thrill. Not always for the best reasons though.
My degree gave me a great insight into language and the use of it, from a technical perpective, but becoming a police officer gave it a whole new meaning.
A bit of a change
With this new perspective and deeper understanding, I earned a place on Romania’s newly formed Crime Prevention Team—something entirely groundbreaking at the time.
Until then, the police had always worked reactively: we were called in after the damage was done. But this was different. For the first time, we were being asked to look ahead—to study patterns, understand causes, and reach people before crime took root. It was a shift from chasing problems to planting solutions. We had the opportunity to educate, to guide, and most importantly, to prevent. It wasn’t just a role; it was a mission to change lives before they reached a breaking point.
Opening doors for the police
Once we started rolling out these plans, it was essential for the team to help get the “buy in” from the general public, and our communication skill where a great help here. Even though the public had the respect for the police force, getting their support was something different, and the more we communicated, the easier it became.
I was working with the schools to do training sessions with the children and young adults. One of the projects involved brining the children into the police stataion and explaining the results to actions to thing, and having people that had been convicted there, giving their side of the story. The children were also able to ask them questions, that gave them a completely new perpective on the results of criminal actions.
